First ever mls game i think

Jim Forney was the radio play-by-play announcer for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the early 1970s. His successor became a legend in Pittsburgh, Mike Lange.

My late cousin, Phil Woosnam, was player/ manager for Atlanta Chiefs, after playing for West Ham and other teams in the UK.He became Commissioner for NASL. He launched football in the USA. He did so much for the soccer league and encouraging young people to play. He was included in the US National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1997. He was a kind, humble man. We met him at a family gathering with the golfing side of the clan. Looks as though the younger members of our family are following him, as they are sports mad ! Football is the favourite , and of course, supporting beloved Arsenal!

Actually the level of play is not nearly as bad as I expected it to be. I've attended quite a few Serie C ( 3rd division) football games in Italy, these teams would be competitive with them.

I remember my Italian Born father commenting on how tactically well coached the Rowdies were by Eddie Firmani, who he remembered for his many seasons playing for Sampdoria in the Italian Serie A. Tampa's defense almost always gave the Cosmos problems. I went to nearly every Cosmos game at Giant's Stadium and watched all of their televised games. Beckenbauer made a huge difference.

The band that marched was the Golden Eagle Band from Richardson High School. I was carrying a clarinet.

My Dad is on this clip of Dallas Tornadoes, he is the one who clashes with the goal keeper. They won the league and he still has his ring. I would absolutely love if someone could please help me gain some archive and this video. He is nearly 80 and lives in England, it would be fantastic if I could get in touch with the club etc

My brother and I were also there for this game as kids, and we managed to walk into the Cosmos locker room after the game to get Franz Beckenbauer’s autograph. He was nice to us, even though we weren’t supposed to be there. RIP Der Kaiser…

Some points of interest 1, The World Name for The World Game is FOOTBALL. 2, Why did they play The U.S. National anthem when most of the Cosmos players were Not American ? An observation from a British = European point of view, when European club teams play each other in football competitions, they do not play National Anthems. When National Football Teams play each other, They Do play National Anthems ... National Anthems for National Teams ... Not Club Teams.

NASL, Thanks for providing this enjoyable fixture with a good sprinkling of players with English League experience. This can be seen especially in Sounders side with Mike England good in defence and Alan Hudson very influential in midfield.

To this date this team is my favorite. Alan Hudson and Tommy Hutchinson were my favorite players. I am the same age as Mark Peterson and Jeff Stock. They both played for the Norpoint Royals....I played for the Mountlake Terrace Roadrunners. We had many great games vs each other. 1970 to 1977. Jeff Durgan (New York Cosmos) also played for Norpoint.

It is weird, I was a kid living in the NYC area during this time. Despite being great, Giorgio was very unpopular with the fans. I still do not know why.
